Frequently Asked Questions

When -

Over the nearly twenty years we've been at Moose Pass, the lakes thaw any time between May 10 - May 26. We start at Lake Hood whenever we have a student who needs a float rating at the very beginning of the season. The higher mountain lakes are open by the first week in June. We fly through mid-September.

Late May, June - days are long, and June 21st is the longest day of the year. The Moose Pass Summer Soltice Festival is on the weekend closest to June 21. It's like a school carnival with live music and beer. The leaves are just coming out in May and the trees are fully leafed by the middle of June. The temperatures range from 50 - 75 degrees F. It can rain any time during the summer.

July - days are usually warm, though it can rain anytime during the summer, and the days are still long.

August - by late August, the days are getting shorter, and cooler, and it can rain any time during the summer (did I say that already?).

September - by mid-September the birch and aspen leaves are gold and the days can be cold. And, it can .... well, you know.

Bring layers of clothes, a rain coat, sun glasses (not polarized), and especially a camera.

Where -

Moose Pass is located at Mile 29.5 of the Seward Highway. It's 97 miles south of Anchorage toward Seward. Be sure to fill-up the gas tank before you leave Anchorage. There are only two gas stations south of Anchorage and they are within 35 miles of Anchorage. The next one on the Seward Highway is in Seward, 30 miles past Moose Pass, 130 miles from Anchorage.

If you're driving and have time, turn at the Alyeska sign and visit a candle shop, jade shop, and the Alyeska ski resort.

If you have more time, stop by Portage Glacier.  It's about half-way and has a visitor's center.  Also, near the turn off for Portage, is Big Game Alaska, with a few Alaskan wild animals that you can see up close.

You'll be traveling along a National Scenic Byway, so enjoy the scenery!

After leaving Anchorage, once you see a 35 mph sign, you've reached Moose Pass. Continue south about a half mile, turn left at Trail Lake Lodge, and you'll see our office just past the white church. The pilot study room is directly behind the office and the cabins and picnic table are in the back yard.
Student Quotes

I vividly remember a moment when you and I were standing at the edge of your floating dock before I went up.  As I was (and still consider myself) newly certified SES pilot, you said something to the effect of, the VERY first thing you want to do, before preflight, is to know the wind. Direction, speed and the way it will move in relation to your environment.  I'm happy to say that I ask myself that regardless of what I am flying and where.
