Alaska Float Ratings
If you are not completely satisfied with your
- flying skills,
- emergency procedures,
- mountain-flying techniques....
This is the flight school for you!
For new pilots - the more confident you are, the more you'll fly. Also, as one student recently told us, he isn't as apprehensive about going to the airport to fly. He's done power-off landings in the Super Cub on a lake in Alaska. He's flown the steep valleys, in windy conditions, and slipped the airplane when needed. He knows and has practised how to handle his C-172 in various situations. He now flies the plane, not the plane flying him.
For experienced pilots - why waste time at a simple, give-me type place. Feel like you've earned it and definitely received value for your hard-earned money. Moose Pass, Alaska, is a challenging place to fly. And as one of our instructors once said, "Why are we based on the most difficult lake to get back to once the wind has comes up?" This same CFI went on to fly in the bush in Alaska and once handled his Beaver safely when confronted with a headwind that he knew would turn into a downwind not to mention a down draft once he arrived at his landing spot. He was ready with power when he needed to be. Turns out another pilot a couple years prior wasn't so "lucky" or experienced as our former CFI was in authentic mountain flying.
For SES - rated pilots - use what you've learned in a magnificently beautiful locale and if you didn't learn in Moose Pass, see what more you can learn about flying floats, flying a Super Cub, and flying in the mountains. We've got it all in one location with several different sized lakes all within a few minutes of our base. Sometimes you can have normal water, glassy water, and rough water, all in one lesson. Learn to identify the step using our gun-sight method so if you fly in another floatplane you'll know how to find the step. Take our three-hour Float Refresher or take six hours, you choose.
